I hate September 11th. And working in New York City everyday just makes it a bit worse. My regular job is working at a 24 cable news network, so theres not getting away from it. As a photographer, there is some draw to "Ground Zero".
On the anniversary, "Ground Zero" (actually a few blocks away) streams of light are shot into the air in a symbolic replacement of the lost towers. And for one night every year, the skyline is complete with the two towers of light.
I shot the "Twin Lights", as I call them, this past 9-11-09. I left work, got in my car and made a deal with myself. I would drive as close as I could to the lights before hitting a detour or road block, which is a regular thing in that area. I figured my shots would come from my place on the road and from either my side window or the open moon roof. The air was thick. You couldn't make out the streaks from far away, but you could the closer you got to them.
I was amazed to find that the streets were open and there was no barrier between me, my camera and the columns of light. I could position myself directly under them as they were originating from the roop top of a parking garage in Battery Park!
Here is my best shot.
